"The Net Mender"

Scratchboard, 18x24in
Original SOLD

This is my second artwork selected to exhibit in the national 2018 Peters Doig Marlborough Art Awards,
which is where the artwork was sold. I was happy for the sale, but sad to see it go, it is always bittersweet when you have worked and lived with an artwork for a long time.

This was a challenge with all the netting, a good many hours scratchboard work for sure!
The photo was taken in Portugal earlier in the year on a remote island off the southern coast which had just the bare essentials including no electricity, fishing their main source of income. This guy was just sitting in the village mending his fishing net (as you do!) ... I don't know how he could make head nor tail of all that netting!! Years of experience I guess.

A photo of the lovely double frame which seemed to suit him perfectly
