(Kotare - New Zealand Kingfisher)
Scratchboard & Oils, 9x12in
This reference photo iwas taken a from a holiday recently. I had a holiday in the Coromandel and we were so lucky to have a bach in an estuary where the kingfishers spent much time catching the crabs on the mudflaps when the tide was low. I hung out neart the pohutukawa trees for a long time lying in wait for a photograph of them.
I love the vibrancy of oils as opposed to inks with scratchboard, so decided to paint the kingfisher with oil paints. To be able to do this, I had to remove theh black ink by using a fibreglass brush and also with rubbing alcohol. This was taken back to the white kaolin clay before starting the layers of oil paint.
