"Going Swimmingly"

A female hybrid Mallard/Grey duck, from a photo I took in a manmade lake just outside of Blenheim. >The Grey Duck is native to New Zealand, but there are only 5% pure grey ducks left in NZ’s duck population. While the rapid decline has been caused by the loss of wetlands and hunting, another principle cause is interbreeding with the very large population of introduced mallard. The critically threatened grey duck is an endemic dabbling duck, and will possibly face extinction in the next 10 years.
