Monty is a New Zealand falcon reintroduced to the Awatere vineyards, Marlborough. Capable of flying at speeds over 100 km/h and catching prey larger than itself, the Kārearea is one of New Zealand’s most spectacular birds. One of 38 species of falcon worldwide, kārearea are endemic only to New Zealand. Although a threatened species in NZ, the kārearea are often seen flying around Marlborough vineyards, where prey is plentiful.

The Marlborough Falcon Conservation Trust is committed to conserving the New Zealand Falcon. They fund a falcon reintroduction scheme in Marlborough, raise awareness about the falcon, and conduct scientific research. Our vision is of a thriving Karearea population, numerically restored throughout Marlborough’s various natural and man-managed habitats. Public awareness of the NZ Falcon is critical to not only ensure understanding of this over-looked native treasure but to eradicate persecution and ensure successful co-existence.
