Scratchboard & Ink (12x16in) SOLD
After spending time with these wonderful native parrots on Stewart Island, I had to produce an artwork from the many photographs I found myself taking! Feeding Kaka on Stewart Island was such an unexpected treat, I had only ever seen one Kaka before and that was in Auckland Zoo, so to see them up so close and in the wild was wonderful. When we arrived at our Stewart Island "bach", there was a welcoming party of 7 Kakas, very cheeky and inquisitive, but actually incredible gentle despite their powerful beaks!! (you can see footage handfeeding the Kakas in our video link below).
For those not familiar with Kakas, they are a forest parrot endemic to New Zealand.
Here is a couple of photos from the experience. This is how close the Kakas got, we handfed them nuts & fruit from our hands, very gentle birds despite their powerful beaks!!
A video from our trip can be seen on YouTube, features the Kakas on Stewart Island, where the reference photo for this artwork was taken. This was during a 2 week road-trip right around the South Island with fellow artist from Wales, Chris Chalk. Starting in my hometown of Marlborough, heading down the West Coast, down to the beautiful Fiordland, over to Stewart Island, and travelling up the east coast via the Caitlins, Lake Ohau and Kaikoura. We both took 'a lot' of photographs, and we had some wonderful adventures. I'm sure there will be quite a few artworks produced between us from that trip!
