The New Zealand Ruru (morepork) is one of my favourite New Zealand birds. I felt super fortunate to see a family resident at Zealandia Eco Sanctuary in Wellington, particularly as these are nocturnal birds so to see them in daylight is a rarity. I spent considerable time just observing them and taking reference photos, what a treat! She was so protective and keeping watch whilst her male partner and 3 chicks played in the back branches.
The native morepork is known for its haunting, melancholic call. This sound gives it the Māori name 'ruru'.
Have a listen to their call on the DoC website.
Open Edition Giclee Prints will soon be available

Framed in a beautiful chestnut coloured wide wooden frame, I thought it suited her perfectly! Framed with UV70 glass, it's a beautiful glass that you can barely see any reflection.
