A recent interview with Ginette Smythe
on Nelson Fresh FM, following winning the Supreme Award in the
Nelson Impressions Art Awards.

An article that appeared in the very first edition of the
New Zeaand Artist magazine.
Was stoked to be included and have a 5 page spread,
to have a chance to talk about a very new medium to NZ,
...scratchboard.

The magazine features artists & photographers from around the world that have contributed to animal sanctuaries and conservation groups through their artwork to help animals in need. Was delighted to get some exposure for HUHANZ and Kaimanawa Heritage Horses ...also the Marlborough SPCA get a small mention too, but that's another story...
Thanks Sara Harley of Paws For Charity for inviting me to contribute and put our little corner of the world
New Zealand's charities in your magazine
It can be previewed & purchased on Blurb (PDF or hard copy)

Commissioned Australasian Gannet painting.
A real thrill to see one of my pastel illustration published in an American ornithological journal.
This is for a paper following studies of gender differences in the size and plumage patterns of
Australasian gannets, Cape Kidnappers, NZ.
(Article in The Blenheim Sun)
Absoutely thrilled "Okarito Kotuku" has been awarded "Second Prize" in this national exhibition
and also very humbled to win the "The Peoples Choice Award"
These were judged
with a panel of 3 judges, out of 160 artworks (awarded The Marlborough Art Society Award of $1000)
Judges' comments:
“A tour de force of fine detail, highly rendered in an exacting medium (scratch board). Bird works can appear static, but this is distinguished by a sense of reality, and the striking impression is of stillness, against a superbly subtle play of dark and light.”

I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED THIS EXTRAORDINARY STORY ABOUT CHRISTIAN, A CAPTIVE-BORN LION BOUGHT FROM A HARRODS LONDON PET STORE IN 1969 BY AUSTRALIANS ACE BOURKE & JOHN RENDALL. WHEN CHRISTIAN WAS BECOMING TOO LARGE FOR HIS LONDON ABODE AND NOT WANTING TO RETURN CHRISTIAN TO A LIFE OF CAPTIVITY IN A ZOO... JOHN & ACE, WITH THE HELP OF VIRGINIA McKENNA & BILL TRAVERS (ACTORS IN THE MOVIE "BORN FREE"), TRANSPORTED CHRISTIAN TO THE HANDS OF GEORGE ADAMSON IN KENYA, WHO REHABILITATED AND RETURNED CHRISTIAN TO THE WILDS OF AFRICA.
40 YEARS LATER, A YOUTUBE VIDEO OF AN EMOTIONAL REUNION (A YEAR AFTER CHRISTIAN'S RETURN TO AFRICA), BETWEEN JOHN, ACE & CHRISTIAN WAS A WORLDWIDE SENSATION, IT TOUCHED THE HEARTS OF SO MANY PEOPLE AROUND THE GLOBE!
CONSEQUENTLY DOCUMENTARIES HAVE BEEN PRODUCED AND BOOKS PRINTED. WITH THE MUTUAL LOVE AND RESPECT SHARED BETWEEN CHRISTIAN, JOHN & ACE, CHRISTIAN'S ENCHANTING STORY IS A SYMBOL OF HUMAN-ANIMAL RELATIONSHIPS AND SERVES TO ILLUSTRATE THE IMPORTANCE AND URGENCY OF ANIMAL AND WILDLIFE CONSERVATION.
I INITIALLY CONTACTED ACE BOURKE AS TO HIS THOUGHTS ON PAINTING CHRISTIAN, AND HAVE SINCE BEEN GIVEN KIND PERMISSION FROM THE LATE BILL TRAVERS' FAMILY,
AND THE OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPHER OF CHRISTIAN, DEREK CATTANI,
TO USE THEIR PHOTOS AS REFERENCES FOR THESE PAINTINGS.
THESE PAINTINGS WILL BE DONATED TO RAISE FUNDS FOR
BORN FREE FOUNDATION AND THE GEORGE ADAMSON WILDLIFE TRUST
WATCH THE AMAZING YOUTUBE VIDEO HERE, IT ALWAYS...WITHOUT FAIL... MANAGES TO MOVE ME TO TEARS...

The British magazine "Artists & Illustrators" was very much part of my source of inspiration when taking on my art career more seriously...
3 years later, I am so delighted to be included in this magazine with my painting "Ai Sleepy"
My very first newspaper article....

Another fellow artist and friend from the UK, Karen Berisford and I decided to do an "art exchange", commission each other if you like. We each chose the subject and medium used. Karen chose a Black Jaguar from one of her treasured photos of her favourite animal, chose pastel as the medium.
I chose a black leopardess, from the same photo I used in a previous painting which sold at my exhibition. Here is a photo of us meeting up in London recently with Karen's painting.
11th September 2009:
I donated an original painting "A Neck Ahead" to the Rapaura School Art Auction.
The painting had an estimated price of $850-$950 and was sold for $1300 on the night.
12th June 2009: I donated a framed Giclee Print of "Vigilance" to Orana Wildlife Park, Christchurch. This is a pastel painting of one of their new male cheetahs, Kiatoa. It was a delight to donate this piece to them, which was very well received, and their enthusiasm was really encouraging! Hopefully there will have many more visits in the near future to get lots of reference photos, particularly of the new
Cheetah cubs and impending Lion cubs! Also found out from Promotions Manager Nathan (pictured below), some information regarding "Tall Blonde" graphite drawing... her name is a female giraffe named "Tunu"
Gifting the Giclee Print to Orana Wildlife Park's Public Relations Manager, Nathan Hawke.
